Vietnam in the Backyard
Once again as we watch the equivalent of the bombing of Iraq from our own fenced in yard, it may be a good time to reflect on the GOOD things we have but always neglect knowing it:
Things like the smell of fresh cut grass, right before everyone comes over to your house, to begin the 4th of July celebrations.
Cracking open that first, cold, ice on the top of the bottle, beer. Today isn’t a day of who drinks what; it’s a day to give one of yours to someone else, and raise a glass.
The sounds of battering metals, rolling ringer after ringer, on the horseshoe pit. At most 4th of July parties I have been to, the pits are the favorite place to be. Winner stays, losers pay, and get back at the bottom of the line.
Cracking the seal on that bottle of rum. Take a shot, pass it on down. There is no such thing as germs on the 4th of July.
Firing up the grill, and hearing the sizzle of the first batch of burgers, knowing that there is no such thing as calories on the 4th of July.
There should never be any problems of any sort on this day. All of your worries can wait until tomorrow.
Knowing that while all of you and your friends are having a great day, some of our friends are thousands of miles away, in a place that they were told to go, and with pride, did just that. All we can do is keep in our thoughts and prayers that our troops will make it back safe, whether you support the war, or not.
Getting to sit back and watch your kids, acting just as crazy as you did, at the sight of getting to hold a simple thing, with a sparkler.
So, on this day, it’s a day to celebrate life. Enjoy today like there won’t be another, so when next year comes around, you can try and do it all over again.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July,
Manimal Lector
