"Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book"
by Terry Jones
Barring those who’ve been living under a rock for the last 30 years, anyone unable to deduce the type of novel this might be simply by noting the title, should be set to a fortnight’s worth of torture forthwith!
Terry Jones, one of the world’s most brilliant satirists, has created a unique gem about capturing fairies, complete with artwork by Brian Froud, who specialises in fairy-, goblin- and “their ilk”-artwork. He, himself, has several books on the subject, many of which are compilations including artwork from Alan Lee of Lord of the Rings fame.
As you follow Lady Angelica Cottington through her years of capturing fairies, you will undoubtedly notice that her handwriting matures and her spelling improves dramatically. Though, I must admit, her use of the word “SMACK” warms my soul as it garners force throughout the book. I desperately wanted Lady Cottington to describe in detail the other book she found, but alas, she was not nearly as wanton as I’d hoped.
An hour spent on the lessons fairies are taught within the Lady’s presence is well worth the £5.
Caveat: Seeing what the fairies look like pressed is surely to render sadists euphoric.
