Metro Girl by Janet Evanovich
I have never been disappointed by Ms. Evanovich’s work. Her latest installment does not disappoint nor does it deceive. Her brilliant execution of characterization via dialogue has yet to be duplicated (in my esteemed opinion).
A carburetor repair expert-cum-insurance adjuster (Barney) meets up with semi-arrogant NASCAR Guy in an effort to retrieve both her brother and his “borrowed” boat. This unlikely pair is aided by a couple of gun toting cigar factory workers, a gay interior designer, his dog, a cruise boat employee with a lighter attempting to evade Cuban wannabe despots, and a couple of government agents.
Set during a two week NASCAR hiatus, the motley crew experience, quite literally, more than their share of ups and downs. James Bond and his madam-du-jour do not compare.
Excerpt from Chapter 1:
“And you have anger management issues.”
“People keep saying that to me. I think I’m a pretty reasonable guy. The truth is I was born under a conflicting sign. I’m on the cusp of Capricorn and Sagittarius.”
“Which means?”
“I’m a sensitive asshole. Whatcha gonna do?”
At the end of the day, I am utterly biased when discussing this author. Her books, despite being short, are formidable reads. Everyone, male and female, should experience her work. If one prefers not to entangle themselves in a series, then this would be the exploitable candidate.
Caveat: High-octane delivered pop-culture laced innuendos.
